Sometimes the opportunities that impact your family the most don’t come from giant advertisements or flashy campaigns. Sometimes they come from another parent casually saying, “Hey, my kids had a really great time at this event.”

And honestly? That one simple conversation wound up introducing our family to one of our favorite homeschool enrichment programs we’ve experienced so far.

Back in April 2025, HomeschoolED Heroes attended our very first Norfolk Nature Navigators session—and from the moment we walked in, we knew this was something special.

So… what exactly is Nature Navigators?

Norfolk Nature Navigators is a FREE monthly environmental education program designed primarily for homeschooled students in grades 1–5, though children of all ages are welcome to participate. The program combines hands-on learning, outdoor exploration, science, nature education, and environmental stewardship in a way that feels exciting instead of overwhelming.

The sessions are hosted by Keep Norfolk Beautiful in partnership with Norfolk’s Park Rangers, and their mission shines through in every single activity they organize. Their goal is to help children grow, connect, and become better stewards of the environment by teaching them about wildlife preservation, recycling, composting, pollution prevention, and the ecosystems around them.

And the best part? It never feels like a lecture.

It feels like an adventure.

We first heard about the program through another homeschool mom in a co-op group. She mentioned how much fun her children had during one of the sessions, and while the conversation seemed casual at the time, it turned out to be incredibly meaningful for our family in the long run.

That’s actually something we really want to emphasize to other parents: share events within your network.

Seriously.

You never know what another family may need or what experience might become deeply important to them later on. Sometimes we underestimate how impactful it can be to simply say, “Hey, have you heard about this?” Word-of-mouth recommendations matter—especially in homeschool communities where so many of us are constantly searching for meaningful, affordable, and enriching activities for our kids.

Our first Nature Navigators session took place on the last Wednesday of April in 2025, and the theme for the day focused on recycling and proper waste disposal. More specifically, the kids learned why throwing trash in the wrong places can become dangerous for wildlife and waterways.

Right away, the lesson felt relevant and easy for the children to connect to.

The instructors taught the kids about the different animals that live in rivers, lakes, and streams, and explained how pollution impacts those ecosystems. The children learned about the kinds of trash that commonly end up in waterways and how harmful those materials can be for fish, birds, turtles, and other animals that depend on clean environments to survive.

But what we appreciated most was how interactive everything was.

The kids weren’t just sitting quietly listening to someone talk at them for an hour. They were moving around, participating, laughing, asking questions, and actively involved in the learning process.

One of the biggest highlights of the day was a recycling relay-style game where the children had to race against each other to correctly sort piles of recyclable items into the proper bins. It was energetic, competitive, and honestly hilarious to watch. At the same time, though, it taught a genuinely useful real-world skill: understanding which materials belong where and why proper sorting matters.

And let’s be honest—when kids are laughing while learning, that information tends to stick.

Beyond the educational side of things, another beautiful aspect of the experience was the social component. The kids made new friends almost immediately. There’s something really comforting about spaces like this because homeschool families often crave opportunities where children can naturally connect with others in relaxed, activity-based environments.

By the time the session ended, nobody wanted to leave.

The kids had an absolute ball.

And as parents, we left feeling grateful—not just for the educational experience itself, but for the reminder that our city has people working hard to create meaningful programs for families and children.

Nature Navigators quickly became one of those hidden gems we found ourselves telling other families about afterward… the same way another mom once told us.

Funny how that comes full circle.

If you’re a homeschooling parent in the Hampton Roads area looking for engaging educational activities that get your children outside, thinking critically, and connecting with nature, we genuinely recommend checking out Keep Norfolk Beautiful and the Nature Navigators program.

Trust us—you never know what amazing experience may start with one simple recommendation.
